Our Friday started off early with a stop at FIU to pick up Mangrove pups with 3 stages of growth to complete the environmental exhibit. CGGC was asked to represent District XII.
Sharon set up the display then attended the FFGC Board Meeting. Jana went off to practice with The Royal Palm Singers. For dinner we met up with Kay, Donna and Charlotte Henderson, her daughter Sarah was one of the Royal Palm Singers. The entertainment was a rousing success—imagine 300 ladies dancing the Cha Cha with Jana singing Day-O from the Banana Boat song! The evening was capped off with the introduction of the 2016 Calendar Girls of which I am most thrilled to be one!
Saturday dawned early with the Business Meeting, election of 2015-17 officers, morning workshops on Floral Design and the many Educational Opportunities offered by NGC and FFGC. Luncheon was followed by even more awards. The speaker was Ken Nedimyer of the Coral Restoration Foundation. Ken spoke of how valuable the Florida coral reefs are to not only Florida but for the health of our oceans. He thanked FFGC for spearheading this project and all the clubs that support this effort.
The 2nd dive to help replant the reef will take place this summer. CGGC is very proud to be supporter of this effort. Saturday afternoon brought additional workshops on new designs, how to involve our youth and the ins/outs of FFGC new website “Wild Apricot“.
Saturday dinner was once again awards, reports on the Deep South convention. We learned that CGGC was one of 4 clubs being considered for a national award for our Mangrove project! The main event of the evening was internationally known floral designer Tony Todesco. His amazing mechanics, beautiful plant material and oh-so-easy delivery made us all feel ‘I can do that’! After his demo all designs including mechanics were raffled off.
Sunday morning we attended the Sunday Interfaith Service. Greeting everyone was a beautiful design by Kay for the altar which was ‘re-cycled’ throughout the day and evening finishing off the day at the newly elected President’s reception!
Sunday’s luncheon was followed by you guessed it . . . awards, lengthy awards! Dr Carl Lewis spoke on The Million Orchid Project after which he received a FFGC award for his knowledge and dedication to the research of Palms.
All through the three days Donna was busy selling tickets for the basket raffle and the Opportunity Drawing. The winner of our basket was from the Fort Lauderdale GC and she sought us out to tell us how fabulous it was!
Sharon Trbovich, Donna Box, Jana White, Kay Murff taking a break from convention duties Anna-Louise Fulks (pictured above) with the CGGC Mangrove display done by Sharon Trbovich for the FFGC Convention Monday dawned early with another Board Meeting for me after which packing the car with more than we came with proved to be a challenge! All in all the 2015 FFGC Convention was a great experience. It was an opportunity to learn what other clubs are doing, to learn new trends and innovative ideas and to meet up with old friends and make new ones.
I hope that if presented with the opportunity to attend next year . . . we’re going to Disneyland . . . that you consider attending.
